We're hiring a Financial Controller in Edmonton, Alberta to deliver enhanced value to the Calibre Industrial Group of Companies and support group-level strategic goals. The successful candidate is a dynamic and highly motivated leader with a professional demeanor, positive attitude, collaborative problem-solving style, and natural ability to communicate effectively.

Reporting directly to the General Manager and collaborating with the VP Finance at Calibre Industrial Group, the Financial Controller is responsible for  overseeing and maintaining all finance and accounting department functions to ensure company accounting procedures conform to Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) as well as providing leadership and coordination of company financial planning and reporting for CESSCO Fabrication & Engineering and our associated companies along with reporting to the Calibre Industrial Group and head office. You will also supervise and direct the finance and accounting teams to ensure accuracy, timeliness and quality of work to meet necessary deliverables.

The successful candidate will need a CPA designation and post-secondary education in either Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance. We're looking for someone with at least 10 years of experience, preferably in manufacturing cost accounting, project accounting, or job costing.

We are looking for someone with a strong knowledge of finance, accounting and full-cycle accounting cycle, budgeting and job costing principles under ASPE as well as in-depth knowledge of accounting software in addition to Microsoft Office and computer network data systems, and office equipment. Knowledge of provincial and federal regulations and tax requirements, including employment standards, union CBA and related payroll legislation is also a necessity.

This is a leadership position, and we require a Financial Controller who can motivate and lead teams composed of diverse personality types and who also has excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and exceptional attention to detail. The successful candidate should have a hands-on approach and be adaptable to changing priorities.

Our Financial Controller needs to be adaptable to a flexible schedule when required.

Duties

  • The Controller position is accountable for the full-cycle accounting operations of the company, which includes the production of financial statements, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records and GL/ element mapping, and implement adequate internal controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with ASPE
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close process for companies assigned, including preparation of journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations and related supporting schedules; prepare all year-end working papers and reporting to head office as requested
  • Monitor and analyze monthly operating results to reduce cost and identify problem areas; provide management reporting continuously improving to generate value-added insights; collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders as required to drive actions and resolution
  • Manage three-way match in Accounts Payable, employee expense reimbursement process, business card reconciliation process; provide oversight to procurement process ensure adequate controls exist
  • Own, review and set appropriate credit limits on customer accounts in consultation with GM/ VP Finance; weekly A/R and exposure management, report on cash collections and escalate problem accounts to relevant stakeholders as per company policy;
  • Responsible for the periodic review and update of various allocation rates for indirect costs and overhead rates
  • Drive working capital improvement by ensuring early pay discounts from vendors are pursued and implemented and other strategies as appropriate
  • Recommend benchmarks for measuring the financial and operating performance of departments; monitor effectiveness, developed reporting to identify underlying business issues; supply strategic information, work with and assist cross-functional leaders to achieve improved outcomes
  • Recommend and drive process improvements to streamline workflows and optimize resource utilization; lead team on initiatives, delegate, see things through completion and make it happen
  • Design, recommend and manage effective organizational structure and staffing to accomplish the department’s goals and objectives; improves existing procedures to ensure best-practices, develops policies and recommends improvements to create conditions for long-term success
  • Create financial analyses as required, examples include but not limited to capital investments, pricing decisions, commercial contract negotiations and union contract negotiations etc.
  • Create and prepare financial outlook and financial forecasts; present value-add analysis to assist management in decision-making
  • Work with project management and production to ensure project job cost templates are in place that accurately measure progress (including earned value analysis, estimate/ as-sold to actual, change orders, etc)
  • Ensure compliance/timely external statutory reporting with local, provincial and federal financial and tax reporting requirements (eg. CRA, Minister of Finance, WCB, Union, Statistics Canada)
  • Represent the company externally to government agencies and any other parties (includes property tax appeals, WCB appeals, CRA & PST audits, etc.)
  • Evaluate, supervise, train and assist team with regards to their roles/duties, in addition to supporting the HR function, benefits, payroll, and other tasks; specifically hands-on processing of payroll functions, review of payroll and related benefits and ensuring proper coverage/ documentation of procedures
  • Support claim for corporate R&D program (SR&ED), property tax roll reviews and various information requests from head office
  • Drive a culture of accountability, accuracy, and financial excellence; build a high-performance team, ensuring strong collaboration between operating companies within group, with group and head office
  • Other tasks, duties and various initiatives/ special projects as assigned or directed by GM, VP Finance or senior management

Qualifications

  • Requires CPA designation; Post secondary education in Business Admin, Accounting or Finance
  • Must have 10+ years of experience with preference towards manufacturing cost accounting or project accounting/ job costing experience
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting and full-cycle accounting cycle, budgeting and job costing principles under ASPE
  • In depth knowledge of accounting software in addition to Microsoft Office and computer network data systems, and office equipment
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal regulations and tax requirements, including employment standards, union CBA and related payroll legislation
